History in this region stretches back to the Neolithic era. Archaeological evidence shows that modern humans lived here long ago. Written records first mention the Mordvin people in the 6th century. Over time, the area felt the influence of Volga Bulgaria and Kievan Rus. Mordvin princes sometimes raided nearby territories like Muroma. The region was briefly united under the Principality of Purgaz. This principality was led by an Erzya prince named Purgaz. He fought against colonization by Vladimir-Suzdal. A civil war later broke out between Purgaz and a Moksha prince named Puresh. The war with Vladimir-Suzdal ended in 1232. Later, the land became part of the Golden Horde as the Mukhsha Ulus.
Following the disintegration of the Golden Horde in the 1430s, Mordvin history shifted. Some Mordvins became subjects of the Khanate of Kazan. Others were incorporated into Muscovy. In 1552, Ivan IV of Russia annexed the Khanate of Kazan. This led to the Russian monarchy subjugating Mordvin lands. The Mordvin elite began adopting Russian customs and the Russian language. In the mid-18th century, Russians started converting Mordvins to Orthodox Christianity. Many people kept shamanist religious features as part of their local culture. The written language also changed over time. In the 18th century, the Latin alphabet was used for Mordvin. By the mid-19th century, the Cyrillic script became the standard.
During the Soviet era, the political status of the region evolved significantly. Mordovia was held by the Bolsheviks during the Russian Civil War. It became part of the Russian SFSR after the Bolsheviks prevailed. In 1925, the government established autonomous districts and village councils. Two written languages were developed during this time. One was based on the Erzya dialect in 1922. The other was based on the Moksha dialect in 1923. Both used the Cyrillic script. The Mordovian Okrug was founded in 1928. It became an autonomous oblast on 10 January 1930. By 20 December 1934, it became the Mordovian Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic. Several forced labor Gulags, such as Temlag, were also established.
