The city is the second-largest English-speaking urban area in the Caribbean. It sits within a watershed area. Several rivers, such as the Montego River, drain this land into the sea. The city is a vital hub for the nation's economy. It is a primary destination for international tourism.

The city's geography and economy are closely linked to its coastal location. A man-made peninsula juts out into the bay. This structure holds a free port and a cruise line terminal.

The city also features many beaches and resorts. Some of these modern resorts are built on the sites of old sugarcane plantations. You can still find some original mill-works and buildings there. One famous site is the White Witch's Rose Hall, which includes a golf course. The city's growth is supported by the Donald Sangster International Airport. This is the busiest airport in the English-speaking Caribbean. In 2017, it served 4.3 million passengers.

History has shaped the identity of Montego Bay through many different eras. The Arawak tribe were the first known inhabitants of Jamaica. They met Christopher Columbus when he arrived in 1494. Spain ruled the island from 1511 until 1655. During this time, Columbus named the area "Golfo de Buen Tiempo." This means "Fair Weather Gulf." The name Montego Bay likely comes from a corruption of the Spanish word "manteca," meaning lard. This may be because the port exported lard, leather, and beef.

British rule changed the landscape of the region significantly. The British established the parish of St. James. This area became a massive producer of sugarcane. During the British colonial period, Montego Bay was the largest sugarcane producer on the island. This industry relied on the labor of enslaved people. In 1831, a major revolt called the Baptist War occurred near Montego Bay.

A leader named Samuel Sharpe led this rebellion. He was eventually hanged in 1832. Today, Sharpe is a national hero. The main square in the town is named in his honor.

Emancipation changed the economic structure of the city. After the period of slavery ended, the sugarcane industry declined. Montego Bay adapted by exporting new products. The city began to grow through the export of coffee and bananas. This shift helped the city transition into the modern era. Today, the city is a center for various services. It hosts major financial institutions like Scotiabank and National Commercial Bank.

It also serves as a center for healthcare through the Cornwall Regional Hospital.

The population of Montego Bay is very diverse. Most residents are of African descent. There are also significant minority groups from East India and China. These groups arrived as indentured servants in the mid-to-late 19th century. Chinese immigrants play a major role in the retail economy. Many shops and supermarkets in downtown Montego Bay are Chinese-owned.

East Indian communities operate many gift and jewelry shops for tourists. There are also residents from Europe, North America, and Hispanic countries. This mix of cultures influences the city's many religions. You can find Protestant, Catholic, Hindu, Muslim, and Buddhist communities here.

Education and infrastructure support the city's large population. Students can attend schools ranging from Pre-K to tertiary levels. The city hosts several major universities. These include the University of the West Indies and the University of Technology. Transportation is managed through a network of highways and roads. The North Coast Highway connects the city to Kingston. The city is also served by the Montego Bay Transport Centre. While the old railway station closed in 1992, the airport keeps the city connected to the world.
