He believed it looked like it "rules a vast domain." Scientists still study their DNA to understand them better.
There are many different types of monarchs around the world. 
One of the most amazing things is how monarchs move. 
The monarch butterfly, scientifically known as *Danaus plexippus*, is a member of the subfamily Danainae. 

Monarchs undergo complete metamorphosis, which is a life cycle consisting of four distinct stages.
The larval stage is divided into five growth periods called instars. Each instar lasts between three and five days depending on the temperature and food. The first-instar caterpillar is pale and almost translucent with a large black head. As it progresses through the second, third, fourth, and fifth instars, it develops striking white, yellow, and black bands. 
After the final instar, the caterpillar enters the pupa stage, also known as the chrysalis. The larva seeks a safe location, often traveling up to 10 meters away from its original milkweed plant. It spins a silk pad on a surface to anchor itself before transforming. The entire transition from egg to adult can take as little as 25 days in warm summer temperatures. However, in cooler spring conditions, this process can extend to seven weeks. 
Scientists have a long history of studying these butterflies. Carl Linnaeus first described the species in 1758, originally placing it in the genus *Papilio*. In 1780, Jan Krzysztof Kluk established the genus *Danaus*. Later, in 1874, entomologist Samuel Hubbard Scudder suggested the name "The Monarch." He believed the name was appropriate because the butterfly is large and seems to "rule a vast domain." Modern researchers even use mitochondrial and nuclear DNA to study their classification and history.
There are several distinct species and subspecies of monarchs. The most common is *D. plexippus*, which ranges from North America to northern South America. There is also the southern monarch, *D. erippus*, found in South American countries like Brazil and Argentina. 
One of the most incredible aspects of the monarch is its migration.
