Molecular physics is a way to study how molecules work.

It looks at the physical properties of these tiny structures. This field overlaps with other areas like physical chemistry. It also connects to chemical physics and quantum chemistry. Scientists often group it with atomic and optical physics. We can learn so much by watching how molecules act. They are much more than just simple groups of atoms.

Inside a molecule, there is a lot of movement. The heavy parts, called nuclei, stay in nearly fixed spots. However, the much lighter electrons move around quite a bit. Molecules also have different energy levels that cause motion. Electronic energy levels come from how electrons move around. Vibrational energy levels happen when the nuclei shake or oscillate. Finally, rotational energy levels happen when the whole molecule spins.

Scientists use special tools to see these tiny movements. One important method is called spectroscopy. This uses light to study energy levels in a molecule. They can also use a technique called scattering. Another way is using X-ray diffraction to see spacing. These tools help find the shape and size of molecules. They can even find how far apart the nuclei are.

Each type of motion uses a different part of light. Electronic transitions use ultraviolet or visible light. Vibrational energy levels use near infrared light. Rotational energy levels use far infrared or microwave light. Some movements happen at the same time. These are called mixed transitions like rovibrational or vibronic. This means they combine electronic, vibrational, and rotational states.

Learning about molecules helps us understand the whole world. Scientists use molecules to test fundamental constants of nature. They even look for new physics beyond the Standard Model. Some molecules might help us build quantum computers. These computers could use complex energy levels to store data. This could make them much more efficient than single atoms. Molecules are truly amazing tools for the future of science.
