Molecular diffusion

Molecular diffusion is a way that particles move and mix.

It happens in gases and liquids when temperatures are above absolute zero. This movement involves atoms, molecules, or other tiny particles. Diffusion helps things spread out until they are even. When the mix is even, we call it dynamic equilibrium.

The particles keep moving, but the overall mix stays the same. This is a very important part of how the physical world works.

This process works by moving particles from crowded areas to empty ones. A crowded area is called a high concentration. An area with more room is a low concentration.

Particles move from the high concentration to the low concentration. This movement is often described by Fick's laws. These laws help explain how the particles travel. The speed of this movement depends on a few things. Temperature, the size of the particles, and how thick the liquid is all matter.

Nature prefers low energy and high entropy, which helps the mixing happen.

Scientists have studied this movement for a long time. They use math to describe how it happens. One way to measure it is through a method called PFG NMR. This technique uses a special experiment called an NMR spin echo. It helps scientists see how molecules move without needing special tracers. This method is very accurate for measuring water. Scientists have found the self-diffusion coefficient for pure water at different temperatures. At 25 °C, the value is 2.299·10−9 m2·s−1. At 4 °C, it is 1.261·10−9 m2·s−1.

There are different types of diffusion to know. Chemical diffusion happens when there is a concentration gradient. This is a change in how crowded the particles are.

This type of diffusion is a non-equilibrium process. It increases the entropy of the system. There is also something called self-diffusion. This is a spontaneous mixing that happens even without a concentration gradient.

Another kind is collective diffusion, which involves a large number of particles in a solvent. In some cases, particles might attract or repel each other. This can change how fast they diffuse.

Diffusion is all around us in daily life. In your body, it helps you breathe. In your lungs, oxygen diffuses into your blood. At the same time, carbon dioxide diffuses out.

This happens in the alveoli of your lungs. It also helps move amino acids inside your cells. Beyond biology, engineers use diffusion to make things. They use it to make ceramics and better steel. They even use it to make semiconductors during production. It is a fundamental part of physics, chemistry, and biology.
