The prefecture faces the eastern Pacific coast. It is bordered by several other prefectures. Iwate Prefecture lies to the north. Akita Prefecture is to the northwest. Yamagata Prefecture sits to the west. Fukushima Prefecture is located to the south. The capital city is Sendai. Sendai is also the largest city in the Tōhoku region. Other major cities include Ishinomaki, Ōsaki, and Tome.

The geography of Miyagi is defined by its diverse landscapes. To the west, the Ōu Mountains form a massive boundary. These are the longest mountain range in Japan. The central part of the prefecture features the large Sendai plain.

The coastline is also very distinct. The Oshika Peninsula projects from the northern coastline. One of the most famous areas is the Matsushima Islands. This group of 260 small islands is covered in pine groves. This area is ranked as one of the Three Views of Japan. Many parts of the land are protected. As of March 2019, 24% of the land area was part of Natural Parks. These include the Sanriku Fukkō National Park and several others like Kurikoma and Zaō.

Miyagi has a complex history and has faced natural challenges. Long ago, the area was part of the Mutsu province. Sendai served as a castle town for the leader Date Masamune. You can still see the remains of Sendai Castle on a hill. The region is also prone to seismic activity. Large earthquakes occur frequently both offshore and inland. On March 11, 2011, a massive 9.0 magnitude earthquake struck. This event caused a major tsunami that damaged the prefecture heavily. This earthquake caused the most damage nationwide. On April 7, 2011, another magnitude 7.4 earthquake hit the coast. This second event caused a tsunami warning. Workers had to be evacuated from the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant. In 2013, Crown Prince Naruhito and Crown Princess Masako visited the area. They went to see the progress made since the 2011 disaster.

The economy of Miyagi relies on several different sectors. Agriculture and fishing are very important to the region. Miyagi is a major producer of food for Japan. It produces 4.7% of the country's rice. The prefecture also provides 23% of Japan's oysters. Additionally, it produces 15.9% of the nation's sauries.

Manufacturing is another huge part of the economy. Most of this industry is concentrated around Sendai. These factories focus on electronics, appliances, and food processing. In July 2011, the government briefly banned beef cattle shipments from northeast Miyagi. This was due to fears of radioactive contamination. This ban has since been rescinded.

Population trends in Miyagi show interesting shifts. The population experienced its largest growth between 1940 and 1950. It continued to grow until the 21st century. Now, like much of Japan, the total population is slowly declining. However, the capital city of Sendai is an exception. Sendai has seen a moderate and steady rise in population for twenty years. The prefecture contains fourteen cities. Sendai is by far the largest with over one million residents. Other cities like Ishinomaki and Kesennuma also have significant populations.

Transportation connects Miyagi to the rest of the country. People use the JR East Tōhoku Shinkansen rail line to travel quickly. There are also several other rail lines like the Senseki and Kesennuma lines.

Culture and leisure are vibrant in Miyagi. The prefecture is a setting for popular media. The manga and anime series Haikyū!! take place here. Other series like Wake Up, Girls! are also set in the region. People enjoy many local festivals. The Sendai Tanabata Festival is held in August. The Aoba Festival in May features the Suzume Odori dance. There are also many famous hot springs. These include Akiu and Naruko. Sports are also very popular. Fans follow teams like the Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles in baseball. They also support Vegalta Sendai in soccer.
