It is the longest man-made waterway in Germany. This canal helps boats travel from east to west. It links many different countries together. Boats can go from France to Poland using it.

Work on the canal began in 1906. It was finished in 1938. This created a direct link between western and eastern Germany. Later, the canal was split into two parts. This happened after the Second World War.

Sometimes the canal must cross over other rivers. It uses aqueducts to do this. An aqueduct is a bridge that carries water.

One big bridge is the Magdeburg Water Bridge. It opened in 2003. This bridge links the canal to the Elbe-Havel Canal. This helps boats reach Berlin. The canal also connects to the Elbe Lateral Canal. That path leads to Hamburg and the Baltic Sea. The canal helps move many things. For example, a power station used coal from the canal. It stayed open until April 2024.
