Palestrina used a style called polyphony. This means many voices sing different parts at once. Some people feared this style made words hard to hear. They worried people could not follow the prayers. Palestrina made his music easy to understand. He used block chords so the words stay clear.

A famous legend says this music saved church music. People thought it stopped leaders from banning polyphony. We do not know if that is true. Still, the music is very important. Students study it in college today. It shows a beautiful way to use many voices.
