Mischmetal is a mix of metals.

It is an alloy. An alloy is a mix of different metals. Most mischmetal is made of rare-earth elements. These are special metals found in nature. A typical mix has 55% cerium. It also has 25% lanthanum. It has about 15% to 18% neodymium. The rest is other small parts and 5% iron.

Many people use mischmetal to make sparks. It is found in lighters and torches. To make better sparks, people mix it with iron oxide and magnesium oxide. This makes a harder material called ferrocerium.

A man named Carl Auer von Welsbach helped find it. He was a scientist who studied these metals. He found ways to use them in industry. He also found new elements like neodymium. Mischmetal is very useful in science. It helps people separate and find other rare metals. This is because the metals in the mix are very similar. Scientists use the mix to study how each metal works.
