Minya Governorate is a significant administrative region located in Upper Egypt. It covers a total area of 32,279 square kilometers. This represents 3.2% of the total land area of Egypt. The capital city is named Minya and sits on the left bank of the Nile River. The name likely comes from the Coptic word Tmoone or Thmonē, which means "the residence." This refers to a monastery that was once in the area. The name may also be linked to the ancient Egyptian name Men'at Khufu.

The governorate is home to a very large population. As of January 2024, the estimated population was 6,453,892 people. Most of these residents live in the countryside rather than in cities. Specifically, 5,234,106 people live in rural areas. Only 1,219,786 people live in urban areas. This means the urbanization rate is only 18.9%. The population density is approximately 115 people per square kilometer.

Administratively, Minya is divided into many different parts. These include various markaz (districts), aqsam (urban divisions), and a new city. There are 9 localities and 57 local administrative units. The region also contains 346 small villages and 1,429 tiny villages. Some of the largest districts by population include Mallawi, which has 839,418 people. Other large areas include Abu Qirqas with 684,612 people and Beni Mazar with 639,122 people. The city of Minya itself is a major urban center.

The history of Minya is incredibly deep and spans many eras. During the Ancient Egyptian period, many monuments were created. The village of Bani Hasan al Shurruq contains 390 rock-cut decorated tombs and chapels. These date back to the Middle Kingdom between 2000 and 1580 BC. Pharaoh Akhenaten also built the city of Akhetaten here. He dedicated this city to the god Aten. He lived there with his wife, Nefertiti, and their daughters. Today, the remains of palaces, temples, and tombs still exist.

Later periods also left a lasting mark on the landscape. During the Greco-Roman period, El Ashmunein served as a regional capital. It was a center for worshiping the god Thoth. The Roman emperor Hadrian built the city of Antinoöpolis in 130 A.D. In the Byzantine period, the Monastery of the Virgin Mary was established near Samalut. Empress Helena helped build this church in 328. During the Arab period, the mosque of Zayid ibn al Mugharah was built in Maghagha. These layers of history make the region very important for scholars.

Archaeologists continue to make important discoveries in the soil. In February 2019, they found fifty mummy collections at the Tuna El-Gebel site. These mummies were wrapped in linen or placed in stone and wooden coffins. Twelve of the graves in four burial chambers belonged to children. In May 2020, an Egyptian-Spanish mission found a unique cemetery at Oxyrhynchus. This site dated back to the 26th Dynasty. They discovered bronze coins, clay seals, and Roman tombstones there.
