Minute

physical science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

A minute is a way to measure time. One minute has 60 seconds. The word comes from a Latin phrase. It means "first small part." This is why we call seconds "second small parts."

Long ago, a man named Al-Biruni used minutes. He split an hour into small parts in 1000 CE. Later, a man named Roger Bacon wrote about time. He used hours, minutes, and seconds.

In 1577, Jost Bürgi made a new clock. He added a minute hand to it. This clock was for Tycho Brahe. Later, Thomas Tompion made a hairspring. This part helped watches have minute hands too.

Most minutes have 60 seconds. But sometimes, a minute has 61 seconds. We call these leap seconds. This happens to keep time right. A minute could even have 59 seconds. This has not happened in 40 years. You can use the symbol "min" for minutes. Some people also use a small mark called a prime.

This shows the hands on a clock.
