Minkowski space

physical science Maturity 9-11 Next article →

Minkowski space is a special way to describe our universe. Scientists use it to map out how space and time work together. This model is also called Minkowski spacetime. It is the main way mathematicians describe spacetime when there is no gravity. This model is very important for physics. It helps explain how things happen in the world around us.

This model works by joining space and time into one thing. Usually, we think of space as having three parts. We also think of time as a separate thing. Minkowski space combines them into a four-dimensional model. This means it has three parts for space and one part for time. It shows that the distance between two events stays the same. This stays true no matter how someone is moving.

Many people worked on these ideas before Minkowski. A mathematician named Henri Poincaré showed how to use time as a fourth part in 1905. He used math to show how time could act like a rotation. Later, Hermann Minkowski wrote a paper in 1908. His paper was called "The Fundamental Equations for Electromagnetic Processes in Moving Bodies." He showed that space and time should be treated as equal. This helped create the idea of a unified spacetime.

There are many specific facts about how this space is shaped. Minkowski space is a type of pseudo-Euclidean space. It uses something called a spacetime interval to measure distance. This interval is different from the distance we use in normal 3D space. In this space, there is something called a light cone. A light cone is a shape that starts at a single point. It helps show where light and other things can go.

You can think of this like a map for everything that happens. In a normal map, you only see where places are. In Minkowski space, the map also shows when things happen. Some paths stay inside the light cone. These are called timelike paths because they move slower than light. Other paths are outside the cone and are called spacelike. There are also paths that follow light itself, called null paths.
