A miniature is a small illustration used to decorate ancient or medieval illuminated manuscripts.

The term originates from the Latin verb meaning "to colour with minium," which is a type of red lead pigment.

Because these illustrations were often small, people sometimes confuse the word with "minuteness." However, the term refers to the coloring method rather than just the size.

While Western traditions focus on book decoration, Asian traditions like Arabic, Persian, and Mughal art developed into single-sheet paintings. These Asian works are often kept in special albums and are also called miniatures.

Artists followed a specific algorithm to construct these scenes on a page.

First, the painter applied a full background to cover the entire surface of the page. Next, they painted larger figures and primary objects over this background. Finally, they superimposed smaller details in front of the figures to complete the image.

To create a sense of perspective, artists used horizontal zones. They placed figures in the upper zones at a smaller scale than those in the lower zones. This technique helped simulate depth on a flat surface.

The history of the miniature begins with very early Christian and classical influences.

The earliest known extant miniatures are uncolored pen drawings from the Chronograph of 354. By the 5th century, luxury manuscripts like the Vergilius Vaticanus showed highly classical styles. These early works featured fine figure-drawing and landscapes that attempted to follow nature.

In these early periods, the use of opaque body color was a universal practice among artists.

As the Byzantine school developed, the style shifted from naturalism to artistic convention.

Byzantine art became more stereotyped under the influence of the church. Artists began to use swarthy flesh-tints and elongated, emaciated limbs. They often used neutral tints like browns and blue-greys.

A notable Byzantine technique involved laying flesh-tints over a dark ground of olive or green. This school also introduced the use of bright gold backgrounds, which later spread to Western painting.

Italian miniature painting evolved through several distinct stages between the 13th and 15th centuries.

During the 13th and 14th centuries, Italian works remained heavily influenced by Byzantine traditions. Artists often used a vivid scarlet pigment that was unique to their region.

By the 15th century, the Renaissance helped Italian miniatures rise to the front rank of art. They began to rival the Flemish school by using thicker pigments. These pigments allowed for hard, polished surfaces and sharp outlines while maintaining rich color depth.

Armenian miniature painting represents a distinct and highly varied tradition.

This art form developed after Mesrop Mashtots created the Armenian letters in 405. Most of the 25,000 surviving Armenian manuscripts are decorated with miniatures.

The artists, known as "flourishers," decorated religious texts with images of flora and fauna. They also included scenes of hunting, urban life, and theatrical performances.

Famous artists like Toros Roslin and Momik left lasting legacies through their work. Despite historical disasters and migrations, the creative zeal of these artists remained. The tradition of the miniature eventually declined in the West as the printed book replaced the manuscript.
