They used a device called a flamethrower, which used a siphon pump. This pump moved a highly flammable liquid known as Greek fire. In 919 CE, the Battle of Langshan Jiang saw the use of "fire oil" to burn a fleet. This marked one of the first uses of gunpowder in a battle. The Chinese also used double-piston bellows to spray petrol through a continuous stream of flame.

Gunpowder led to the creation of many different types of projectile weapons. Early versions were called "fire-lances," which used hollow bamboo tubes. These tubes could fire sand, lead pellets, or pottery shards. Eventually, bamboo was replaced by cast iron tubes. These iron tubes were the ancestors of modern guns. By the 13th century, the Chinese also used a "multiple bullets magazine erupter." This was a bronze or iron tube filled with about 100 lead balls. They also developed land mines that used a rip cord or motion booby trap. These traps used a steel flint wheel to create sparks for ignition.

In the late 13th century, the Song dynasty also used gunpowder-propelled rockets. These were known as "Fire Arrows." During the Song dynasty, scholars wrote manuals like the Wujing Zongyao to document these techniques. These books covered strategy, training, and the production of weaponry. This era of innovation helped define how gunpowder would be used for centuries. The transition from simple fire-spears to complex cannons changed the scale of warfare forever.

Between 1740 and 1914, the Industrial Revolution transformed military technology again. For land warfare, infantry changed due to highly accurate, rapid-loading rifles. The invention of smokeless powder also improved how soldiers fought. In the 1860s, machine guns were developed in Europe. Rocket artillery was also advanced, such as the Mysorean rockets used in India. Logistics changed as well, with railways and telegraphs helping move and communicate with troops. Industrialization allowed factories to mass-produce uniforms, tents, and munitions.

Even medical science became a part of modern military systems. During the Crimean War in 1854–56, medical facilities were reorganized. Florence Nightingale helped create the foundations of modern nursing in Britain. This helped improve how hospitals cared for soldiers. Today, technology continues to evolve through robotics and advanced computing. Modern systems like the Atlas robot show how engineering continues to push the limits of what machines can do. The history of military technology is a long chain of scientific discovery and application.
