Mikhail Vasilyevich Frunze was a prominent Soviet revolutionary, politician, and military theorist.
Frunze's political journey began with the Russian Social Democratic Labour Party (RSDLP). In 1903, a major split occurred within the party during a congress in London. The leaders, Vladimir Lenin and Julius Martov, disagreed on party tactics. Lenin wanted a small group of professional revolutionaries, while Martov wanted a much larger party. At age 18, Frunze sided with Lenin’s faction, known as the Bolsheviks. He became a leader during the 1905 Revolution by organizing textile workers in Ivanovo. This activism led to his arrest in 1907. He was sentenced to death, but the sentence was changed to life-long hard labour in Siberia.
After ten years of imprisonment, Frunze escaped to Chita. He worked as an editor for the Bolshevik newspaper *Vostochnoe Obozrenie*. The year 1917 brought massive political change through the February and October Revolutions. In Minsk, Frunze led the civilian militia and was elected president of the Byelorussian Soviet. He later moved to Moscow to lead armed workers during the struggle for city control. These experiences prepared him for the intense fighting of the Russian Civil War. From 1917 to 1922, he rose through the ranks of the Red Army. He served as a Military Commissar and eventually became a top commander.
As a commander, Frunze achieved several major military victories. In 1919, Leon Trotsky gave him overall command of the Eastern Front. Frunze successfully defeated Admiral Alexander Kolchak and the White Army in Omsk. He also drove Basmachi insurgents and White Army troops out of his native Turkestan. His forces captured the cities of Khiva in February 1920 and Bukhara in September 1920. In November 1920, his army took the Crimea and pushed Pyotr Wrangel's troops out of Russia. He also led the military effort against Nestor Makhno's anarchist movement in Ukraine. His leadership helped secure many territories for the Soviet state.
Frunze was also an important diplomat for the Soviet Union. In December 1921, he traveled to Ankara during the Turkish War of Independence. He served as an ambassador for the Ukrainian SSR to establish Turkish–Soviet relations. The Turkish leader Mustafa Kemal Atatürk respected Frunze as a friend and ally. Atatürk even placed a statue of Frunze in Istanbul's Taksim Square. By 1921, Frunze was elected to the Central Committee of the Communist Party. In 1925, he reached a high position as the Chairman of the Revolutionary Military Council.
Despite his success, Frunze's life ended in a controversial manner. He suffered from a chronic ulcer and required medical attention. In 1925, he was hospitalized after a severe episode. Although he was hesitant about surgery, Joseph Stalin and Anastas Mikoyan urged him to have the operation. Frunze died during surgery on October 31, 1925. Some historians believe he was assassinated because he supported political opponents like Grigory Zinoviev. It has been alleged that doctors administered a dose of chloroform seven times the normal amount.
Frunze's legacy is visible in many names and places. He was buried in the Kremlin Wall Necropolis.
