Middle French

language culture Maturity 9-11 Next article →

Middle French was a very important time for the French language. It lasted from the mid-14th century to the early 17th century. This period was a bridge between the old ways and the new. During this time, French became different from other local languages. It was the first version that people today could mostly understand.

This era helped prepare the grammar for Classical French. It also helped create the words used in later years.

Many things changed in how people spoke and wrote. One huge change was how nouns worked in a sentence. People stopped using a complex system of noun endings. Instead, they began using a simple 's' to show plurals. Because of this, the order of words became much more important. For a long time, the verb stayed in the second position. This helped create the sentence structure we use today.

History shows how the language grew through new rules. In 1539, King Francis I made a big decision. He passed the Ordinance of Villers-Cotterêts. This rule made French the only language for legal acts. Before this, many people used Latin for school and law. This helped French become the official language of the Kingdom of France.

It moved the language away from Latin and other local tongues.

New words arrived from many different places and cultures. French writers borrowed many words from Latin and Greek. They even took military and art words from Italian. This happened because of wars in Italy and contact with Italian thinkers. Other words came from Spanish, German, and even the Americas.

Scholars sometimes changed spellings to match Latin roots. This sometimes made words sound different than they looked.

Many famous writers used Middle French to share their ideas. You can find this language in works by François Rabelais. Other writers included Michel de Montaigne and Clément Marot. In 1549, Joachim du Bellay wrote a famous defense of French. He believed French was worthy of great literature.

This period was a time of great growth for many thinkers. It paved the way for the beautiful French used in books later.
