Microstate (statistical mechanics)

physical science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Everything in our world is made of tiny parts. These parts move in many ways. A microstate is one specific way those parts are set up. It tells us the exact spot and motion of every single piece.

We can also look at the big picture. This is called a macrostate. A macrostate shows big things like heat, pressure, or volume. Many different microstates can look the same in a macrostate. For example, think about flipping two coins.

One macrostate is having one head and one tail. There are two ways to make this happen. Another macrostate is having two heads. There is only one way to do that.

Scientists use microstates to study things like entropy. Entropy is a way to measure how many ways parts can be arranged. If a system has only one microstate, its entropy is zero. We can also use these states to study heat and work. Heat comes from messy, tiny changes in the parts. Work comes from big, orderly changes in the system.
