He wanted to honor scientific tools from the Age of Enlightenment. He gave the group the name "le Microscope." By 1763, the name became the Latin version, Microscopium. Other people later helped define the exact borders of the group. In 1930, an astronomer named Eugène Delporte set these boundaries.
