Michael George Francis Ventris was a brilliant English architect and philologist. A philologist is someone who studies the history and structure of languages. Ventris is most famous for deciphering Linear B. This was an ancient script found on clay tablets. For decades, the meaning of these symbols remained a total mystery. Ventris turned this mystery into a brand new field of study. His work changed how historians understand the ancient world. 
To solve the puzzle, Ventris used a highly systematic method. He first studied the work of Alice Kober. She had noticed that certain words in Linear B had changing endings. This suggested the language used declensions, which are changes in word forms. Ventris used this idea to build complex grids. These grids helped him associate specific symbols with consonants and vowels. He did not know the exact sounds at first. However, the grids allowed him to map the structure of the language. This mathematical approach was essential to his success.
Ventris used several distinct clues to unlock the script. One major clue came from comparing different sets of tablets. He noticed that some symbol groups appeared only on tablets from Crete. He made an inspired guess that these were place names on the island. This guess proved to be correct. He also used tablets found by Carl Blegen at Pylos. These tablets were from the Greek mainland. By comparing the Cretan texts to the mainland texts, he found the key. He eventually determined that the underlying language was an archaic form of Greek. 
Ventris had a very diverse upbringing that shaped his mind. He was born into a traditional army family. His grandfather was a major-general in China. His father was a lieutenant-colonel in the Indian Army. As a child, he lived in Switzerland for eight years. This allowed him to master French, German, and Swiss German. He also became fluent in Polish by the age of eight. At Stowe School, he began his intense study of Linear B. He often studied the script at night using a torch under his covers. 
His life was marked by significant historical events. In 1942, he was conscripted into the Royal Air Force. He trained as a navigator rather than a pilot. He flew on a Handley Page Halifax bomber during the war. 
The significance of his work cannot be overstated. Before Ventris, scholars had many different theories about the tablets. Arthur Evans had tried to decipher them with little success. Ventris's discovery proved that Cretan civilization was part of Mycenaean Greece. This overturned many previous theories about Minoan history. In 1955, he was awarded an OBE for his services to paleography. Paleography is the study of ancient writing systems. His work helped establish the timeline of the ancient Mediterranean. 
Ventris left a lasting legacy in many different fields. Even though he died young in a car crash in 1956, his work continues. Today, his attribution of the language to Mycenaean Greek is universally accepted. He was posthumously awarded the Kenyon Medal in 1959. We see his name in several places today. There is a street named for him in Heraklion, Crete. Most impressively, the International Astronomical Union named a crater on the Moon after him. The Ventris crater stands as a permanent tribute to his genius.
