Michael Ende was a famous German writer. He wrote stories full of magic and wonder. His most famous book is The Neverending Story. More than 35 million copies of his books were sold. His tales have been translated into 40 languages.

Ende grew up in a home full of art. His father was a painter. During World War II, his life was hard. He saw fires in his city. He also joined a secret group to help his country. Later, he studied acting. He even worked in a small theater company. This work taught him to be practical.

Writing took a lot of patience for him. While writing Jim Button, he got stuck. He did not know how to save his characters. He waited three weeks for a new idea. Then, he used steam to save them!

Ende wrote for children and adults. He liked to use fantasy to talk about real life. He also loved the culture of Japan. He thought their rituals were very special. He wanted to show how magic stays in our world.
