Michał Kalecki was a highly influential Polish economist of the 20th century.

He was a Marxian economist, which means he studied how social classes and power affect the economy. Many scholars describe him as one of the most original economic thinkers ever. He was a pioneer in macroeconomics, the study of large-scale economic factors. He was among the first to use mathematical models and statistical data to explain economic patterns. His work bridged the gap between class analysis and the theory of oligopolies. An oligopoly is a market where only a few large companies control most of the business. This unique approach helped create new schools of thought like post-Keynesianism.

Kalecki's economic theories focused on how different parts of a system interact. He studied the business cycle, which describes the natural ups and downs of an economy. He also explored economic growth, full employment, and income distribution. He investigated how money moves through a society and how inflation affects value. One of his most important contributions was his work on the political boom cycle. He argued that economic policies could change because of shifts in political power. He believed that when workers achieve full employment, they gain more social power. This can lead to a reaction from business leaders who want to protect their influence. This cycle shows how politics and money are deeply connected.

His early life in Poland shaped his unique perspective on the world.

He was born in 1899 in Łódź, which was a major industrial center. Growing up in a place with many labor struggles influenced his later views. He originally studied civil engineering at the Warsaw Polytechnic. However, his family faced financial difficulties after his father lost a textile workshop. Kalecki had to work as an accountant to support them. He eventually left his formal studies to enter the job market. During this time, he taught himself economics by reading thinkers like Mikhail Tugan-Baranovsky and Rosa Luxemburg. These authors helped him understand the potential growth of capitalist systems.

In the 1930s, Kalecki made a massive breakthrough in economic theory. In 1933, he wrote an essay titled "An Attempt at the Theory of the Business Cycle." This paper developed a complete theory of how economies fluctuate. Interestingly, his ideas on effective demand appeared three years before John Maynard Keynes published his famous work. Many historians believe Kalecki developed these core ideas before Keynes did. In 1936, Kalecki moved to England to work at the London School of Economics and Cambridge.

There, he met famous economists like Joan Robinson and Piero Sraffa. He also met Keynes, though their meeting was somewhat formal and distant. Despite their different personalities, they shared many similar economic conclusions.

During World War II, Kalecki applied his skills to help the British government.

He worked for the Oxford Institute of Statistics starting in 1940. His task was to provide statistical analysis for the war economy. He wrote detailed reports regarding the rationing of goods. Rationing is a system where the government limits how much of a product people can buy. Kalecki argued that economic rationing was better than freezing wages or prices. He believed that controlling the supply of goods was a more effective way to manage inflation. His wartime work was essential for managing the country's resources during the conflict.

After the war, Kalecki held several high-level international positions. He worked for the International Labour Office in Montreal for fifteen months. In 1946, he became the Deputy Director of the United Nations Economic Department in New York City. He stayed in this role until 1955, where he helped prepare World Economic Reports. However, he eventually resigned due to political pressures in the United States. During this time, Senator Joseph McCarthy led a period of intense political scrutiny. Kalecki was accused of being a supporter of communism, which made his professional life in the U.S. difficult. This experience eventually led him to return to Poland in 1955.

In his later years, Kalecki returned to his home country to contribute to its development.

He worked alongside other great economists like Oskar Lange. He served as an advisor to many different governments around the world. These included the governments of France, Cuba, Israel, Mexico, and India. His career was marked by a deep commitment to understanding the social consequences of economic policy. In 1970, he was nominated for the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economics. Sadly, he passed away that same year. His legacy lives on through the mathematical and social methods he used to study the world.
