The main goal was to break through the Hindenburg Line. This was a very strong defense made of trenches and barbed wire. By breaking this line, the Allies hoped to force Germany to end the war.

One group of artillery was led by Harry S. Truman. He later became a president of the United States. The first phase was very hard because many American troops were new to war. General John J. Pershing even had to stop the attack on October 1 to regroup his men.

The second phase started again on October 4. During this time, new divisions took over the fighting. The battles continued through the Argonne Forest and near the Meuse River.

The German army had held this area for years. They had built many machine gun posts and trenches inside the forest. The Americans and French worked together to push these lines back. This constant pressure helped weaken the German ability to keep fighting.

This campaign was the deadliest in the history of the U.S. Army. Over 350,000 people suffered casualties during the offensive. This included about 26,277 Americans and 35,000 French soldiers.

Many American soldiers also struggled because of the Spanish flu. However, the success of the offensive led directly to the Armistice. This agreement ended the fighting on November 11, 1918. The hard work of the soldiers helped bring peace to the world.
