It has a busy urban center at its heart. It also includes the land around that center. These areas share many things. They use the same roads and trains. They also share the same jobs and shops.

Some metro areas have one main city. For example, Paris is a central city in its area. Other areas have many cities that are all important. The Dallas–Fort Worth area in the United States has eight main cities. In some places, people live in a commuter belt. This is a zone of towns near the big city. People often travel from these towns to the center for work.

Metro areas can be very big. The New York metro area is one of the largest in the world.

In South Africa, the Greater Johannesburg area has over 9.6 million people. In Japan, the Greater Tokyo Area was once the most crowded metro area. These large regions help many people live and work together.
