The area is incredibly dense with people. It is the most populous region in the Philippines. Globally, it ranks as the 8th most populous urban area. In Asia, it is the 7th most populous metropolitan area.

The region functions as the primary center for the nation. It serves as the heart of government, education, and culture. It is also a global power city. This means it has a major impact on international commerce and finance. The region also influences media, art, fashion, and technology. Because it hosts all foreign embassies, it is a center for international diplomacy. Economically, the region is a powerhouse. It accounts for 36% of the gross domestic product (GDP) of the Philippines. This makes it the fourth largest ASEAN country subdivision by GDP.

Metro Manila is composed of several distinct political units. It includes sixteen highly urbanized cities.

These cities are Caloocan, Las Piñas, Makati, Malabon, Mandaluyong, Marikina, Muntinlupa, Navotas, Parañaque, Pasay, Pasig, Quezon City, San Juan, Taguig, and Valenzuela. The city of Manila serves as the national capital. There is also one independent municipality called Pateros. These cities and the municipality work together within the larger metropolitan system. This structure allows the region to manage its massive population and complex infrastructure.

The history of this area began long before the modern era. In the early 16th century, a polity called Maynila existed.

Experts suggest the name comes from the Sanskrit word for indigo. At that time, Manila was the capital of the Kingdom of Luzon. It was a walled and fortified city used for international trade. The ruling class used the Malay language for foreign affairs. Trade networks reached as far as China and Japan. Many nearby lordships, such as Tondo and Taguig, existed in this territory.

Spanish influence changed the region significantly starting in the 1500s. In 1570, the battle of Manila took place between the Kingdom of Luzon and Spain. This conflict led to the destruction of the original Manila. The Spanish then established a new settlement on the same site. They built a walled city known as Intramuros.

This walled city became the capital of the Spanish East Indies. Later, the Manila galleon trade connected Asia to Mexico across the Pacific. This era brought significant cultural and commercial exchange to the islands.

Different colonial periods reshaped the administrative boundaries of the region. During American rule in 1901, the province of Manila was dissolved. Most of its territory was moved into the new province of Rizal.

Later, in 1939, President Manuel L. Quezon established Quezon City. He intended for it to eventually replace Manila as the capital. During World War II, the area faced intense conflict. The battle of Manila in 1945 resulted in the loss of over 100,000 lives. Much of the urban development from earlier designs was destroyed during this time.

The modern National Capital Region was created through specific legal steps. In 1975, Presidential Decree No. 824 formally recognized the metropolitan area. This was done to provide integrated services to the growing population. In 1978, it was officially designated as the National Capital Region.
