Metre

physical science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

A metre is used to measure length. It tells us how long things are.

Long ago, people used the Earth to define it. They used the distance from the equator to the North Pole. Later, they used a metal bar.

Now, we use light to find the length. Light travels a certain distance in a tiny bit of time. This keeps the metre the same everywhere.

In the United States, people spell it "meter." Most other places spell it "metre."

It is a very important tool for science. We use it to measure the world around us.
