It is not a measure of time. It shows how far light travels in one year. Light moves very fast through space.

One light-year is a huge distance. It is about 9.46 trillion kilometres. This is used to measure the space between stars.

Some galaxies are very far away. The Andromeda Galaxy is 2.5 million light-years away. The universe is very big!

Scientists also use a unit called a parsec. One parsec is about 3.26 light-years.
