This created a high plateau with many vertical cracks. The rocks are made of sandstone and conglomerate. Conglomerate is a mix of sand, mud, and stone. Over millions of years, wind and water shaped the rocks. They wore down the cracks into these huge pillars. This type of weathering is quite rare in this area.

Monks have lived here for many centuries. In the 800s, hermit monks lived in the rock hollows. They wanted to be alone to pray. Later, they built monasteries to stay safe from attacks.

They built these homes on top of the high cliffs. In the past, climbing up was a very hard job. Monks used long ladders or ropes to reach the top. They even used large nets to pull up goods. In the 1920s, people carved stone steps into the rock.

There were once 24 monasteries in Meteora. Today, only six of them are still standing.

Four of these are still used by monks or nuns. The Great Meteoron is the largest and oldest one. It was started by Saint Athanasios around the year 1356.

Another monastery is called Varlaam, built in 1517. Saint Stephen is a convent run by nuns. The Holy Trinity and Rousanou are also part of the site. These buildings are very special to the Eastern Orthodox Church.

Meteora connects many different parts of history. Near the rocks, the Theopetra Cave shows how humans lived long ago. Some research shows people were there 50,000 years ago.

Meteora is a remarkable landscape of massive rock pillars in northwestern Greece. It is located in the Trikala regional unit within the Thessaly region. The site sits near the Pindus Mountains and the Pineios River.

The name Meteora means "lofty" or "elevated." It shares an etymological root with the word "meteor." This site is a UNESCO World Heritage site. It was added to the list in 1988. This honor recognizes its unique architecture and cultural significance.

The geology of these pillars is quite unusual. They are not volcanic plugs made of igneous rock. Instead, they consist of sandstone and conglomerate. Conglomerate is a sedimentary rock made of sand, mud, and stone. These materials settled in a delta at the edge of a lake millions of years ago. About 60 million years ago, during the Paleogene period, earth movements pushed the seabed upward. This created a high plateau with vertical fault lines.

Over time, water, wind, and temperature extremes caused weathering. This process wore down the faults into the giant columns we see today. The rock layers are very uniform. This makes the vertical weathering look very abrupt.

Religious life at Meteora has a long history. Hermit monks first moved to the ancient pinnacles in the 800s CE. They lived in small hollows and fissures within the rock. They sought solitude for prayer and worship. By the 11th century, monks began occupying the actual caverns. However, formal monasteries were not built until the 1300s. Monks built these structures to hide from Turkish attacks on Greece.

Access was originally very difficult and dangerous. Monks used removable ladders or hoisting ropes to reach the summits. They also used large nets to pull up goods and people. These nets symbolized a traditional way of life. In the 1920s, workers carved steps into the rock to make access easier.

At its peak in the 16th century, Meteora hosted 24 monasteries. Today, only six of these structures remain extant.

Four of these are active monasteries managed by monks. These include the Great Meteoron, Varlaam, Holy Trinity, and Saint Stephen. Saint Stephen is a convent run by a community of nuns. Two other monasteries, Saint Nicholas Anapausas and Rousanou, are still standing but are no longer in active use. Each of the active monasteries houses fewer than ten individuals. This shows how the community has changed over hundreds of years.

The Great Meteoron is the largest and oldest monastery. Saint Athanasios the Meteorite founded it between 1356 and 1372.

He built it on the Broad Rock to ensure safety and control. The monastery features a main church called the katholikon. This church is dedicated to the Transfiguration of Jesus. The complex also includes a hospital and various chapels. One chapel is even situated inside a cave. The monastery thrived in the 16th century with over 300 monks. Today, it remains a living religious site.

Other notable sites nearby provide clues to human history. The Theopetra Cave is located near Kalabaka.

Radiocarbon dating shows humans were present there 50,000 years ago. The cave contains records of two major cultural transitions. These include the replacement of Neanderthals by modern humans. It also shows the shift from hunting-gathering to farming. A stone wall was even built at the cave entrance 23,000 years ago. This was likely a barrier against cold winds during the Ice Age.

Meteora remains a dynamic and changing environment. The massive rock pillars are unpredictable and pose risks. Rock falls are a constant threat to tourists and pilgrims. In 1954, a magnitude 7 earthquake shook the area. In 2005, a massive rock fall closed an access road for several days. Despite these challenges, the thin pillars still stand. Vegetation grows thickly in the cracks of the cliffs. This growth is supported by water found in the crevices. The site continues to connect geology, history, and religion for the world.
