Metastasis is a very important part of how cancer works. It happens when cancer cells move from their first home to a new spot in the body. The first spot is called the primary site. The new spots are called metastases.

This is different from cancer invasion. Invasion is when cancer just grows into the tissues right next to it. Metastasis is much more serious because the cells travel far away. This spread is one of the main ways doctors tell if a tumor is benign or malignant.

How does this spread actually happen? It works in a few different ways. First, cancer cells break away from the primary tumor. They use special tools to break down the proteins that hold tissues together. This lets them escape into the body's transport systems. Some cells travel through the blood, which is called hematogenous spread. Others use the lymphatic system, which is called lymphatic spread.

Cells can even travel in small groups called CTC clusters. These clusters might help the cancer settle in new places more easily.

Scientists have studied this for a long time to understand it. They want to know why cancer causes over 90% of cancer-related deaths. There are different theories about how this works. One idea involves how cells change their shape to move. Another idea looks at special cancer stem cells. Scientists also study how cells might fuse with other cells in the body.

By learning these steps, researchers hope to find ways to block the movement.

There are many important facts about where cancer goes. The lungs, liver, brain, and bones are common landing spots.

If breast cancer moves to the lungs, it is still called breast cancer. The new tumor is made of the same type of cells as the first one. Doctors use a system called TNM staging to track this. The "M" in TNM stands for metastasis. If cancer has spread, it is placed in Stage IV. This stage makes it much harder for treatments to work.

Understanding metastasis helps us see how the body's systems connect. For example, the blood carries things everywhere in our bodies. This is why cancer can use the blood to travel to distant organs. The lymphatic system also acts like a path through the body. Different cancers like to visit certain organs more than others. Breast cancer often moves toward the bones and lungs. Knowing these paths helps doctors look for signs of trouble in the right places.
