Sometimes we send two messages at once. One message is what we say. The other tells how to hear it. This is like a hint about the words.

One man named Gregory Bateson studied this. He said every message has a hint. A hint can change the whole meaning. It can even make a word mean its opposite.

We use our bodies to send hints too. A person can use their hands or stance. This helps others know what we mean.

Think about a game. A person might say something funny. They use a look to show it is just play. This tells you not to be sad.

Hints help us understand each other every day.
