The word mestizo has a long history. It mostly describes people with both Spanish and Indigenous roots.

This term grew during the time of the Spanish Empire. In those days, leaders used it in official papers. They used it in census records and church books.

Some people also used the name to describe themselves.

In the past, Spanish rule used a system of labels. These labels grouped people by their family roots and skin color. One type of painting from Mexico shows these groups. These are called casta paintings.

As time went on, the meaning of the word changed. In Mexico, it helped create a new identity. People felt they were neither just Spanish nor just Indigenous. After the Mexican Revolution, the government used this idea to help unite the country. Today, the word can also describe a way of life and culture. In some places, it means people follow European ways of living.
