It sits about 12 million light-years away from us. You can find it in the Ursa Major constellation. It is a very bright and large object. This makes it a favorite for many space watchers. Professional scientists study it very closely.

Inside the center of this galaxy lives a supermassive black hole. This black hole is very heavy. It has the mass of 70 million suns. It is an active black hole. This means it has a disk of material around it. It also shoots out a one-sided jet of energy. There might even be a second black hole nearby. Scientists think it orbits the main one every 30 years.

People first found this galaxy a long time ago. Johann Elert Bode discovered it on December 31, 1774. Because of him, many call it Bode's Galaxy. Later, in 1779, Pierre Mechain and Charles Messier found it too. They put it in the famous Messier Catalogue. In 1993, a person named F. Garcia found a star explosion there. He saw it from Spain on March 28.

This galaxy is the largest in its group. The M81 Group has 34 galaxies in total. Messier 81 pulls on its neighbors with gravity. It pulls on galaxies named M82 and NGC 3077. This pull strips hydrogen gas away from them. The gas forms long, thin shapes in space. This gas can also help make new stars. The galaxy also has about 210 globular clusters.

You can look at this galaxy from Earth. It is best to see it in April. You usually need binoculars or a small telescope. Most people cannot see it with just their eyes. You need a very dark sky to see it well. If you use a large telescope, you can see its shapes. It is a wonderful neighbor in our local part of space.
