It is an oratorio. An oratorio is a large piece for singers and instruments. It is not like an opera. In an opera, singers act out a story. In Messiah, the singers do not act or speak as characters. Instead, they sing about the life of Jesus.

A man named Charles Jennens chose the words. He picked parts from the Bible. He wanted the music to be a deep reflection on faith. Handel wrote the music very fast. He finished it in just 24 days in 1741.

The work has three parts. Part I talks about the birth of Jesus. Part II covers his death and rising again. It ends with the famous Hallelujah chorus. Part III speaks about heaven. Handel wrote the music for a small group of singers. Later, people began to perform it with huge choirs. Some groups have used up to 800 performers! Today, it is one of the most famous choral works in the world.
