Merlin Olsen was a famous American football player, actor, and announcer. He spent 15 years playing for the Los Angeles Rams in the NFL. As a defensive tackle, he worked on the line to stop the other team. He was a star on a famous group called the "Fearsome Foursome." This group included players Deacon Jones, Rosey Grier, and Lamar Lundy. Olsen was known for doing much of the heavy lifting on the field. He was chosen to play in the Pro Bowl 14 times.

Olsen's journey began in Logan, Utah, where his family was very kind. His parents were graduates of Utah State University. His family often hosted, fed, or tutored people in their neighborhood. In ninth grade, a coach told him that sports were not for him. The coach suggested he try the arts instead. However, Olsen stayed with sports and went to Utah State University. He was a great student and earned a finance degree in 1962. He even earned a master's degree in economics later in 1971.

In college, Olsen was a leader on the football field. He won the Outland Trophy as the best lineman in the country. His defensive team was very strong and set school records. In 1960, his defense allowed only 6.5 points per game. They even held one team, the Idaho Vandals, to just 23 total yards. His team finished 10th in the national polls that year. This was the only time Utah State reached that high in the polls.

Olsen achieved many big honors during his long career. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1982. He was also in the College Football Hall of Fame. In 1974, he won the Bert Bell Award as the NFL MVP. He accepted this award for all the players who work in the trenches. He was also named one of Utah's top 50 athletes of the century. In 2009, Utah State announced they would name their field after him.

After football, Olsen found success in many other ways. He worked as a color commentator for NBC and CBS. He helped call many big games like the Super Bowl. He also became a well-known actor on television. He played Jonathan Garvey on the show "Little House on the Prairie." He also starred in his own drama called "Father Murphy." Even after his career, he stayed busy helping others. He helped raise money for the Children's Miracle Network.
