Imagine a giant circle in the sky.

This circle is called a meridian. It passes through the north and south poles. It also goes through the zenith. The zenith is the point directly above you. The meridian also goes through the nadir. The nadir is the point directly below you.

Earth spins on an axis. This axis is the line Earth turns on. The meridian is part of a set of planes. These planes all pass through that axis. One plane goes through your exact spot on Earth. This plane makes a line on the ground. We call this a geographical meridian.

When the plane hits the sky, it is a celestial meridian.

Stars seem to move across the sky. They do this because Earth rotates. A star will drift across your upper meridian. This is called a transit. When a star hits the meridian, it reaches its highest point. This moment is called culmination. The star is very easy to see then. The word meridian comes from a Latin word. It means midday or south. This is because the sky looks tilted toward the south.
