The International Astronomical Union (IAU) later adopted the three-letter abbreviation "Men" in 1922. The official boundaries were set in 1930 by the Belgian astronomer Eugène Delporte. These borders form a polygon with eight segments. In the equatorial coordinate system, the declination ranges from −69.75° to −85.26°. Mensa is bordered by several other constellations. These include Dorado to the north and Hydrus to the northwest. Octans lies to the south, while Chamaeleon is to the east. Volans sits to the northeast.
Mensa contains many interesting stars, even if they are dim. Alpha Mensae is the brightest star in the constellation. It has an apparent magnitude of 5.09. This makes it the only constellation without a star brighter than magnitude 5.0. Alpha Mensae is a solar-type star of class G7V. It is located 33.32 light-years from Earth. About 250,000 years ago, it came within 11 light-years of our solar system. Back then, it was nearly second magnitude in brightness. 
Other stars in the constellation show different life stages. Gamma Mensae is an orange giant of spectral type K2III. It is 10.6 billion years old and is 104.9 light-years away. Beta Mensae is a yellow giant of spectral type G8III. It is 660 light-years away and sits in front of the Large Magellanic Cloud.
The region also holds deep-sky objects. Part of the Large Magellanic Cloud lies within the borders of Mensa. This is a satellite galaxy of the Milky Way. 
Mensa connects the stars to Earthly history and mythology. While the stars have no ancient myths, Table Mountain does. The mountain is known as "Tafelberg" in Dutch and German. It is surrounded by Devil's Peak and Lion's Head. The explorer Bartolomeu Dias once described the mountain as a mythical anvil for storms.
