An exoplanet is a planet that orbits a star outside our solar system. For example, the star Pi Mensae has a super-Earth planet. This planet was found by the TESS satellite in 2018.

Mensa connects to the real world through the history of exploration. The mountain it honors has its own rich stories. In Dutch and German, the mountain is called "Tafelberg." It sits near other mountains called Devil's Peak and Lion's Head. An explorer named Bartolomeu Dias once saw the mountain. He thought it looked like a mythical anvil for storms. The constellation was created by the French astronomer Nicolas-Louis de Lacaille. He worked in the 18th century. During a two-year stay at the Cape of Good Hope, he catalogued 10,000 southern stars. He designed 14 new constellations to map uncharted regions. Most of his constellations honored scientific instruments from the Age of Enlightenment. However, Mensa was the only one that did not do this.

Instead, he named it to honor Table Mountain in South Africa. He originally called it "Mons Mensae." He observed that clouds often covered the mountain during stormy winds. He chose to place a "table" in the sky beneath those clouds.

The name Mensa is Latin for table. In 1844, Sir John Herschel proposed shortening the name to one word. The International Astronomical Union (IAU) later adopted the three-letter abbreviation "Men" in 1922. The official boundaries were set in 1930 by the Belgian astronomer Eugène Delporte. These borders form a polygon with eight segments. In the equatorial coordinate system, the declination ranges from −69.75° to −85.26°. Mensa is bordered by several other constellations. These include Dorado to the north and Hydrus to the northwest. Octans lies to the south, while Chamaeleon is to the east. Volans sits to the northeast.

Mensa contains many interesting stars, even if they are dim. Alpha Mensae is the brightest star in the constellation. It has an apparent magnitude of 5.09. This makes it the only constellation without a star brighter than magnitude 5.0. Alpha Mensae is a solar-type star of class G7V. It is located 33.32 light-years from Earth. About 250,000 years ago, it came within 11 light-years of our solar system. Back then, it was nearly second magnitude in brightness.

It also has a red dwarf companion star. This companion is located at a projected separation of roughly 30 AU.

Other stars in the constellation show different life stages. Gamma Mensae is an orange giant of spectral type K2III. It is 10.6 billion years old and is 104.9 light-years away. Beta Mensae is a yellow giant of spectral type G8III. It is 660 light-years away and sits in front of the Large Magellanic Cloud.

Some stars, like Zeta and Eta Mensae, show infrared excesses. This suggests they have circumstellar disks of dust around them. Pi Mensae is another interesting star. It is a solar-type star located 59.62 light-years away. In 2001, scientists found a substellar companion orbiting it. In 2018, they also discovered a super-Earth exoplanet orbiting this star.

The region also holds deep-sky objects. Part of the Large Magellanic Cloud lies within the borders of Mensa. This is a satellite galaxy of the Milky Way.

Inside this galaxy, you can find the globular cluster NGC 1987. This cluster is estimated to be 600 million years old. It contains many red, ageing stars.

There is also an open cluster called NGC 1848, which is 27 million years old. One very distant object is the quasar PKS 0637-752. In 1999, the Chandra X-Ray Observatory imaged this quasar. The images showed a gas jet that is 330,000 light-years long.

Mensa connects the stars to Earthly history and mythology. While the stars have no ancient myths, Table Mountain does. The mountain is known as "Tafelberg" in Dutch and German. It is surrounded by Devil's Peak and Lion's Head. The explorer Bartolomeu Dias once described the mountain as a mythical anvil for storms.
