A memoir is a true story based on personal memories.

While a biography tells the story of a whole life, a memoir has a narrower focus. It usually looks at one specific time or a certain part of a career. A writer of these stories is called a memoirist or a memorialist. These books often focus on turning points or special moments. People value memoirs because they provide a first-hand account of history. They allow us to see the world through someone else's eyes.

Writing a memoir involves sharing what a person truly remembers. Most people expect these stories to be factual and honest. Some writers create what is called a "free memoir." In these books, the writer might not stay strictly to literal facts. They might use a bit of creative play with the truth. However, a standard memoir is understood to be a nonfiction narrative. This means the author is sharing their own real experiences.

People have been writing memoirs since ancient times. Julius Caesar wrote about his battles in the Gallic Wars. He also wrote about the civil war between 49 and 48 BC.

In ancient Greece and Rome, these writings were sometimes like "memos." Writers used them as memory aids to help them later. In Japan, the Sarashina Nikki is a famous early example. It was written during the Heian period and explored court life.

Many different types of people have shared their stories. Henry David Thoreau wrote Walden in 1854 about living near a pond. During the 20th century, many wrote about the hardships of war. Primo Levi and Elie Wiesel wrote about their time in concentration camps. Scientists also use memoirs to leave a historical record. In the UK, a journal publishes memoirs from famous scientists. This includes people like Albert Einstein and Alan Turing.

Today, memoirs are more popular than ever before. In the 1990s, many ordinary people began writing their own stories. They wanted to make sure their family history did not disappear. Social media and digital book tools have helped this grow. People now use memoirs to pass down a personal legacy. Some groups, like the Veterans History Project, help collect these stories. Writing a memoir helps people find their place in the world.
