These stories focus on big feelings and exciting plots. The plot is often more important than the characters. Characters in a melodrama are often very simple. You might see a clear hero or a clear villain. These stories often take place in a home. They deal with themes like family, love, and marriage. Sometimes, an outside person causes trouble for the family.

Music plays a big part in melodrama. In the past, music helped show the mood. It gave cues to the audience about the action. The word comes from Greek and French words for song and drama. In the 1700s, these works were a mix of plays and opera. Some had only one actor, called a monodrama. Others had two actors, called a duodrama.
