The Hebrew Bible says he met a man named Abram. Melchizedek brought him bread and wine. He also gave Abram a blessing. After this, Abram gave Melchizedek a tenth of his things. This is often called a tithe. Some people think his name means "king of righteousness." Others think it might mean "my king is Zedek."

Different groups have many ideas about him. In the New Testament, the book of Hebrews says Jesus is a high priest. It says he is a priest in the same way as Melchizedek.

Some Jewish writings say Melchizedek was actually a man named Shem. Other stories say he was born in a very special way. One book says he was born from a virgin. It says he was born fully grown and ready to speak. Scholars study these stories to learn about old beliefs. They wonder if the stories were added to the Bible later on. They think this might have been to support certain leaders.
