He is known in Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. Many holy books name him as a patriarch. A patriarch is a very important male leader.

In the Bible, Methuselah was the son of Enoch. He was also the grandfather of Noah. Many people believe he lived for 969 years. This would make him the oldest person in the Bible. Some think his long life was a special sign. Others think the numbers show a very distant past. Some people think the numbers were a mistake in translation. They think the years might actually be months.

In other stories, Methuselah had a big role. The Book of Enoch says he was a priest. In Islam, he is seen as an ancestor of Noah. His name is now a way to talk about living a long time. If someone lives a long time, people might call them "as old as Methuselah." Even dogs that live many years are sometimes called "Methuselah dogs." His story helps people think about how long life can last.
