While it mostly happens in the skin, it can rarely occur in the eye, mouth, or intestines. It can even happen in the lungs in very rare cases. This happens in only 0.01% of primary lung tumors. In women, it often grows on the legs. In men, it most commonly occurs on the back.

The way this cancer works starts with cells growing out of control. First, there is a radial growth phase. During this stage, the tumor is less than 1 mm thick. It stays in the top layer of the skin. At this point, it is very unlikely to spread. Next, it enters an invasive radial growth phase. Now, the cells gain the ability to spread. Finally, it enters a vertical growth phase. The tumor grows deeper into the skin. It can then move through blood or lymph vessels to other parts of the body.

Scientists have studied many causes of this disease. The main cause is exposure to ultraviolet light, or UV light. This light comes from the sun or tanning devices. UV light can damage the DNA in your skin cells. This damage can cause cells to grow in a bad way. People who use tanning beds before age 30 are 75% more likely to develop melanoma. Some people also have a higher risk because of their genes. For example, the MC1R gene can cause red hair and increase risk. Other rare conditions like xeroderma pigmentosum also make it easier for cancer to grow.

There are many important facts about melanoma numbers. In 2015, 3.1 million people had active disease. This resulted in 59,800 deaths. The number of cases is expected to rise. In 2022, there were 331,722 cases worldwide. By 2040, this may reach 510,000 cases. About 80% of all global cases happen in adults aged 50 or older. Australia and New Zealand have the highest rates in the world. In the United States, it happens 1.6 times more often in men than women.

Some types, like nodular melanoma, might just look like a new lump. If a doctor finds it early, they can often use surgery to remove it. Most people are cured if the cancer has not spread to other places.
