Melanoma is a serious type of skin cancer. It starts in melanocytes. These are the cells that make melanin. Melanin is the pigment that gives skin its color.

A main cause is UV radiation. This is light from the sun or tanning beds. This light can damage the DNA in your cells. This damage can cause cells to grow out of control. People with fair skin have less melanin. This means they have less protection from the sun.

You can look for changes in your moles. A mole might change shape or color. It might get bigger or feel itchy.

Doctors use a biopsy to check skin spots. A biopsy is a way to study a small piece of skin. If found early, doctors can use surgery to remove it. Most people are cured if the cancer has not spread.
