These early roles allowed him to refine the sharp, observational wit that would define his later film career.

One of Brooks's most significant creative partnerships was with Carl Reiner. They developed a unique style of improvisational comedy during social gatherings. Reiner would often choose a character for Brooks to inhabit without prior notice. This led to the creation of "The 2000 Year Old Man" routine.

In this sketch, Brooks played an ancient man with absurdly long life experiences. They eventually released several comedy albums based on these performances. Brooks won a Grammy Award for Best Comedy Album in 1999 after several nominations.

Brooks's early life was marked by significant personal challenges and loss. Born Melvin James Kaminsky on June 28, 1926, in Brooklyn, he grew up in a tenement.

His father passed away from kidney tuberculosis when Brooks was only two years old. He has noted that much of his comedy is rooted in processing anger and hostility. As a small and sickly child, he also faced bullying from classmates. These experiences drove him toward show business, a goal he set at age nine.

During World War II, Brooks served in the United States Army in Europe.

He served as a combat engineer and a forward artillery observer with the 78th Infantry Division. His duties included clearing booby-trapped buildings and locating land mines. He witnessed the heavy toll of war and used singing as a way to cope. After the conflict ended, he joined the Special Services to perform comedy for troops. He was honorably discharged as a corporal in June 1946.

Brooks's influence extends beyond film and into the world of musical theater. His film The Producers was adapted into a successful Broadway musical that ran from 2001 to 2007.
