He also left Dhaka Collegiate School because of his involvement in the Swadeshi movement. Despite these obstacles, he studied at several prestigious institutions. These included Dhaka College, Presidency College, and Rajabazar Science College.

His professional career was vast and influential. From 1923 to 1938, he served as a professor at Allahabad University. He later became a professor and the Dean of the Faculty of Science at the University of Calcutta.

In 1927, he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society. He was also the president of the 21st session of the Indian Science Congress in 1934. Saha was a leader in building the scientific community in India. He helped establish the National Academy of Science in 1930. He ran as a member of the Union of Socialists and Progressives. To fund his campaign, he requested a ₹5000 advance for his textbook, *Treatise on Heat*. He won his seat by a margin of 16%.

Saha's political work focused on long-term planning and infrastructure. He was a chief architect of river planning in India. He prepared the original plan for the Damodar Valley Project. He also worked on topics like education, healthcare, and flood control. Some critics felt he strayed too far from his scientific laboratory into political territory. However, Saha believed science and industry were necessary for his country's development. He wanted to bridge the gap between his scientific dreams and the reality of government implementation. His goal was to improve river valley development and multipurpose river projects.

Meghnad Saha passed away on 16 February 1956. He suffered a cardiac arrest while traveling to the Planning Commission office. He had been dealing with hypertension for ten months before his death.

His remains were cremated at the Keoratola crematorium in Kolkata. Today, his legacy lives on through the many institutions that bear his name. Scientists like Jayant Narlikar have noted that his work was of Nobel Prize class. His contributions to astrophysics continue to influence almost all modern progress in the field.
