Scientists have identified over 35,000 megalithic structures in Europe alone. These sites stretch from Sweden to the Mediterranean Sea.

There are several specific ways these stones were used.

A single upright stone is called a menhir. In Western Europe, people sometimes call these standing stones. A monolith is any single standing stone from prehistoric times. Some stones were placed horizontally as capstones. These often sat over burial chambers without extra support.

Other stones were arranged in alignments. These are rows or spirals of many stones. The Carnac Stones in France are a famous example with thousands of stones. People also built stone circles, which are sometimes called cromlechs.

Many megaliths were built as tombs for the dead.

Another type is the passage grave. This has a chamber with a roof and a long, straight path. These structures were often covered by mounds of earth. Some people built cists, which are small stone boxes. These functioned like coffins and were placed underground.

Other types include gallery graves, which are long chambers under earthen mounds.

History shows that megalithic building began a very long time ago.

Around 9000 BC, people built ceremonial structures at Göbekli Tepe in Turkey. This is one of the oldest known examples of monumental architecture. In 7400 BC, a 12-meter monolith was found underwater in the Strait of Sicily. This stone weighed approximately 15,000 kg.

By 7000 BC, constructions appeared at Atlit Yam in Israel. Megalithic culture spread through the Neolithic period. This was the age of agriculture. Most megaliths were built between the Neolithic and the Bronze Age. The Chalcolithic period, or the age of copper, also saw much building.

Different cultures created unique megalithic styles.

In Bosnia, people built fortified settlements using cyclopean walls. These are walls made of massive stones. This shows how megaliths were used for more than just burials.

Many of these stones were likely used for astronomy.

Stone circles like Stonehenge show evidence of solar and lunar alignments. Stonehenge is famous for its connection to the solstice. This means the stones align with the sun at specific times of the year. Other circles, like the one at Lough Gur in Ireland, also belong to this tradition. These sites helped ancient people track time and seasons.

Today, megaliths help us understand human development. They show how early societies organized labor to move huge rocks. They also show how people connected their lives to the earth and the stars.

From the massive stones in Lebanon to the dolmens in South Korea, these monuments are global. They represent the many ways humans have expressed their culture through stone. They remain as lasting marks of the people who lived thousands of years ago.
