Medical drama

arts Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Medical dramas are stories told on television or in movies. These stories focus on places like hospitals, clinics, or doctor's offices. Sometimes they show paramedics helping people in need. Many modern shows do more than just show medical work. They also show the personal lives of the characters. This helps us see how the people in the shows live.

People enjoy these shows because they feel real. Professor George Ikkos says characters often seem like everyday citizens. They have extraordinary careers that people can relate to. This connection makes the stories very popular with many viewers.

There are many different ways these stories work. Some shows focus on a single medical practice. These stories often detail the life of a small community. For example, the show Dr. Finlay's Casebook focused on this. Another show, A Country Practice, did this too. Some shows use a mix of different styles. The series Emergency! combined rescue programs with hospital stories. It showed both paramedics and emergency room doctors.

This helped show real-life rescues in a new way.

These kinds of stories have a very long history. History City Hospital is often called the first televised medical drama. It first aired way back in 1951. Before that, there was the Dr. Kildare film series. That series ran from 1937 to 1947. Another early show called Medic ran from 1954 to 1956. In 1961, shows like Ben Casey became very popular. This helped make medical stories a staple of prime-time TV.

Many different types of medical shows grew from these early ideas.

Some shows can be funny, while others are quite sad. The show M*A*S*H began in 1972. It used comedy but also had dark, serious moments. This mix of feelings is seen in many series. Shows like Grey's Anatomy and Scrubs also use this style. Some shows stay on the air for a very long time. General Hospital has been running since 1963. In the UK, Casualty has aired since 1986. It is the longest running medical drama in the world.

Even the show Doctors ran for 23 years until 2024.

Watching these shows can actually feel very intense. Marshall McLuhan predicted these shows would be very successful. He noted that TV images can feel very real. Some medical students even felt a strange effect while watching. When watching surgery on a screen, they felt like they were performing it. It was as if they were holding the scalpel themselves.

Because of this, these shows are even used in medical education. They can be a helpful way to add to medical school studies.
