People often call them daytime dramas or simply "soaps." These shows focus on big feelings and personal relationships. They often follow a large group of characters or one big family.

You might see characters deal with marriage, family fights, or secrets. Some shows even include magic, like ghosts or witches. These stories keep people watching because they never truly end.

Each episode works in a very special way. A soap opera uses a continuous narrative, which means the story stays open. One episode might end on a "cliffhanger" to create tension. This is a surprise that makes you want to see what happens next.

Most episodes switch between several different story threads. Some stories might connect, while others run on their own. In daytime shows, actors might not appear in every single episode. This rotation helps manage the many different characters in the show.

The history of these shows began on the radio. The first program many scholars call a soap opera was "Painted Dreams." It was written by Irna Phillips and started on WGN radio in Chicago. It premiered on October 20, 1930. The shows were often made for housewives who listened during the day. Another early show, "Clara, Lu 'n Em," became the first network daytime serial. It moved to a weekday daily time slot in February 1932. The name "soap opera" comes from the soap companies that paid for them.

There are many famous soaps with long histories. "The Archers" on BBC Radio is the longest-running soap in the world. It first aired in 1950. On television, "Coronation Street" is the longest-running soap opera. It started on ITV in 1960. In the United States, "Guiding Light" was a very long story. It began as a radio drama in January 1937. It continued on television for many years until 2009. This made it the longest story ever told on a broadcast medium.

Different countries have different styles of soap operas. American daytime soaps often show glamorous or wealthy people. They sometimes focus on romance like a book.

In the United Kingdom and Australia, soaps often show everyday life. These shows might focus on working-class people and real social problems. They also use comedy to balance the serious parts of the story. Some shows, like "EastEnders," focus on specific places like London. This makes the world of the story feel very real to the viewers.
