A media blackout is when news is hidden. This can happen in TV, radio, or on the internet.

Sometimes, leaders make these rules. In the Soviet Union, many news groups followed these rules. They did this because they feared being arrested. In other places, like Egypt, the government shut down the internet. They did this to stop people from meeting during protests.

Blackouts can also be used for safety. During World War II, the U.S. asked news groups to hide news about fire balloons. This kept the enemy from knowing if the balloons worked. In the UK, news about a sunken ship was hidden. This was done to keep people's spirits up.

Other groups use blackouts to help. In 2005, New York City transit workers used one. This helped them talk about new deals without outside pressure. Sometimes, sports teams use them too. This is called a "silenzio stampa" in Italy. They do this if they feel the news is not fair.
