It sits in the Western Region of the island. For a very long time, it was the capital of Malta. Today, the city is known as the "Silent City." This nickname comes from how quiet it is. Most cars are not allowed to drive on its streets. Only a few residents and special vehicles can go inside.

This keeps the old feeling of the city alive.

The city is built on a high plateau. This natural shape made it a safe place to live. People have lived on this land since prehistory. Around the 8th century BC, the Phoenicians built a colony there. They called their settlement Ann. Later, the Romans took control of the area. They renamed the city Melita.

At that time, the city was much larger than it is now. It even spread into the modern town of Rabat.

History changed the city many times. During the Middle Ages, the city became smaller to make it easier to defend. In the 11th century, people rebuilt it as Madina. This name comes from an Arabic word meaning "town." The city stayed the capital until the year 1530. That was when the Order of St. John arrived. They chose to make Birgu their new capital instead.
