It sits in the Western Region of the island. Long ago, it was the capital of Malta.

The city sits on a high plateau. This made it a safe place to live. People lived there a very long time ago. The Phoenicians built a colony there in the 8th century BC. Later, the Romans took the city. They called it Melita.

The Roman city was much larger than Mdina is today.

Mdina has thick stone walls.

These walls were built to keep the city safe. The city has narrow streets that look like a maze. Many people call it the "Silent City." This is because very few cars are allowed inside. It is a very quiet place to walk.

Today, many people visit Mdina to see its old buildings. You can see St. Paul's Cathedral or the grand Mdina Gate.
