Explorers have visited this place for a long time. Captain James Clark Ross found the sound in February 1841. He named it after Lieutenant Archibald McMurdo. This includes first-year ice and fast ice, which is ice connected to the shoreline. There is also very hard multi-year ice. Because of these obstacles, most surface ships need ice-strengthened hulls.

Extreme weather patterns define the environment of McMurdo Sound. The region experiences katabatic winds. These are cold, heavy winds that descend rapidly from the Antarctic polar plateau. Because the plateau is at elevations of 2,500 meters or more, these winds are very powerful. They can reach hurricane force when they hit the coast.

Local residents call sudden blizzards "Herbies." These winds often funnel between islands like White Island and Black Island. This area is known as "Herbie Alley." Despite these storms, the air is very dry. Annual snowfall on Ross Island averages only 100 millimeters.

The sound plays a major role in the global climate system. During the summer, wind and currents push pack ice northward into the Ross Sea. This movement stirs up cold bottom currents. These currents spill into larger ocean basins. As surface water freezes, it excludes salt. This leaves behind heavy, cold water that sinks to the ocean floor.

Climatologist Gerd Wendler noted that this process is widespread. He stated that 75 percent of all bottom water in the world comes from Antarctica. This makes the sound a key part of Earth's ocean circulation.

Exploration of the sound has a long history. Captain James Clark Ross discovered the area in February 1841. He named it after Lieutenant Archibald McMurdo of the HMS Terror. In the early 20th century, famous explorers used the sound for their journeys. Ernest Shackleton and Robert Scott built bases on the shoreline. They used these sites to launch overland expeditions toward the South Pole. Today, the sound remains strategically important for logistics. It supports the United States McMurdo Station and New Zealand's Scott Base.

A massive iceberg once changed the local environment significantly. In March 2000, Iceberg B-15 broke off from the Ross Ice Shelf. It was the largest iceberg seen at that time. A piece called B-15A eventually drifted toward McMurdo Sound.

This iceberg grounded at the mouth of the sound. It blocked the outflow of pack ice. This created a barrier for thousands of penguins trying to reach food. It also blocked two cargo ships intended for McMurdo Station. Icebreakers like the USCGC Polar Star had to work to clear the way.

Despite the harsh conditions, a rich ecosystem exists beneath the ice. Many species have adapted to the frigid temperatures. The Antarctic notothenioid is a bony "ice fish" found here. It is related to perch and walleyes.

Other animals include Antarctic, emperor, and Adélie penguins. You can also find Weddell seals, leopard seals, and orcas. The seafloor is home to sea spiders, starfish, and sea urchins.

Human activity has also left a mark on the sound. For over 50 years, the bases on Ross Island have operated nearby. In the past, garbage was sometimes towed onto the sea ice. A 2001 survey found items like fuel drums and shipping containers on the seabed.

To protect the environment, a $5 million waste treatment plant began operating in 2003. Scientists also monitor pollution from anti-fouling paints on ship hulls. These paints contain tributyltin, which can affect marine life. Managing these impacts is a constant priority for researchers in the region.
